There’s nothing like a leather sofa to add a feeling of luxury and style to a home. Leather sofas also have the added advantage of being easy to care for and keep clean. With proper care and maintenance a leather sofa is a piece of furniture that will add beauty and charm to the living room for years to come. But considering the amount of use a sofa gets on a daily basis, it’s only natural for it to get soiled at times. Follow these simple tips to keep a leather sofa looking like it just came from the showroom.

How to Maintain a Leather Sofa

The first and most important step in maintaining the life of a sofa is to properly protect it when it’s new. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to have a quality soil, spill and stain repellent applied to the leather sofa by a leather care professional.

For everyday leather sofa cleaning, it’s safe to use a good moisturizing soap like Dove. To clean, simply dampen a soft cloth with warm water and lather with soap. Rub over the sofa to remove any dirt and stains. Don’t use too much water. There’s no need to rinse after cleaning, simply polish the leather with a damp cloth so the moisturizing soap will condition the leather.

Removing Stains from a Leather Sofa

To eliminate any ink stains, rub a cotton swab that’s been dipped in rubbing alcohol over the stain. Then dry the affected area with a blow dryer. Use acetone-free nail polish remover if any part of the stain lingers. Pour a small amount of the nail polish remover onto a soft cloth and rub over the stain. This method should completely eliminate the ink stain.

Using too much water to clean a leather sofa will cause water stains. Which is why it’s crucial to avoid cleaning with cloths that have been soaked in water. Using only damp cloths to clean leather will allow the water to evaporate. Then a quality leather conditioner can be applied to the sofa after the water has dried.

Be Careful While Using any Chemical on Sofa

Only non-caustic cleaning products should be used on leather sofas. But it may be difficult to determine if a particular cleaning product is safe for leather. To avoid damage, spot test the cleaning product on a non visible part of the leather to see if it has a harmful effect.
