Planning a Ceramic Mosaic on Furniture
Every mosaic starts by prepping the furniture and planning the mosaic design. Furniture preparation is rather simple and primarily deals with the parts of furniture that will not be covered in tile. These areas may need to be repainted or stained. Each piece of furniture will have specific needs and these should be addressed before applying the ceramic tiles.
After the furniture has been prepared, the mosaic designs can be drawn. Start by assessing the surface to which the tiles will be applied. For flat surfaces such as benches and tables, the application is rather straightforward. Flat areas require a border though to prevent jagged mosaic edges from showing. Create a border using painted wooden molding. Cut the molding to fit and tack it to the furniture using small nails. For rounded furniture that will be completely covered like lamps, the design can be applied using extra mortar and small pieces of tile so that the final surface mimics the underlying surface of the furniture.
Before applying the tiles, use a pencil to lightly draw the design on the furniture. This will act as a guide for application of the tiles. Once the preparation is completed, assemble the following supplies and tools:
- Tile
- Mortar
- Trowel
- Bucket
- Sponges
- Tile Cutters
- Gloves
- Grout (Pick a color that will complement the mosaic color scheme)
- Grout sealer
Applying the Tile Mosaic to Furniture
Using a trowel, apply a thin layer of mortar to the surface of the furniture. Lightly push the tile into the mortar to secure it on the furniture. Repeat this process until the mosaic design is complete. Allow the mortar to dry overnight.
Fill in the spaces between the tiles by carefully pushing grout into the gaps. Use a damp sponge to wipe off any excess grout from the surface of the tiles. Make sure to thoroughly fill the spaces and avoid any air bubbles or imperfections. Allow the grout to fully dry and then apply a grout sealer. Read the grout sealer directions carefully as some require two to three coats. The grout sealer will protect the grout and keep it looking clean and bright.
